New research indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these medications must be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural changes.
